ZWISCHENRÄUME I
“Zwischenraum” is most commonly defined as the free space in between two or more things, as well as the time distance between incidences. Like this, it can exist as both defined and undefined space. As well, considered from a psychological point of view as a state of mind or philosophically as something illimitable, mysterious and sometimes threatening.
In general, “Zwischenraeume” can be seen and experienced as something fragile, undefined, temporary and cryptic. By their uncertain nature they ask constantly for definition and debate when being confronted with them.
My interest lies less in directly defining a certain “Zwischenraum”, but more in exploring its conditions and acquainting oneself with it.
I am creating objects which are able to exist in and symbolize the feeling of being positioned in an undefined “Zwischenraum”. Hence providing these objects their own habitat in which they are in charge.The objects interact with the body and the senses and offer, a way to experience the inbetween and the possibility of being confronted with it, eliminating the need of defining it entirely.
Series of threes pieces, playing with different sizes and volumina. Metal constructions stringed with hair with a hole for a head. They suggests a space in a bigger, more defined surrounding. From inside the surrounding remains visible while focussing on something outside thorough the gaps of the hair strings. By focussing on the inner space itself it appears as a self-contained, rather big environment. From outside, depending on the exposure of light, the texture of the surface either closes completely or allows estimations on the apparitional facial features of the wearer. The object integrates to the body of the person wearing it by means of a material produced naturally on the body, and acts as a body extension, which offers an additional buffer space between the being and his surrounding.
