DEFENSE MECHANISMS FOR THE URBAN BEING I

In Freudian psychoanalytic theory, defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies brought by various entities to cope with anxiety. I created wearable devices that wearers can act upon when faced with certain fears. I chose contemporay accessories (bags, pockets) which blend in the urban environment as well as symbolizing today’s private space, and equipped them with features inspired from defense mechanisms of animals.

Constructed from pockets, the skirt acts as a ‘tree camouflage’ when it is lifted over the head. The pockets form the leaves of the crown and the feet symbolize the trunk. The skirt also forms a space around your upper body, shielding you from the outer world.
